"frisk" Showing at the Wexner Center for the Arts Film & Video Theatre June 27th 29th, 1996 at 7pm.
Michael Gunther (Dennis) contemplates while a potential victim played by Mark Ewert sleeps in Todd Verow's adaptation of Dennis Cooper's FRISK from Strand Releasing.
The Wexner Center Film & Video Theatre brings the experimental queercore feature film "Frisk", by filmmaker Todd Verow, to Columbus for a three-day run, June 27th thru June 29th.
Previous showings of this film elsewhere around the country have had some negative reaction. Last year, during its premier at the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, the film created quite an uproar over the film's depiction of grisly torture and murder during the main character's masochistic sexual fantasies. And during a March 1996 screening in New York City, some audience members rushed to the exits, disgusted by the gruesome storyline.
The film was based on author Dennis Cooper's novel
"Frisk", which portrayed the main characters, ex-lovers Dennis and Julian, as two men desensitized to the horrors of violence, fascinated by the immediacy and entertainment of violence by the news media, television, movies, and actual occurrences happening in their neighborhood. Their yearning is to project this exciting violent behavior into sexual fantasies, such as snuffing and extreme torture.
The movie starts out with a younger Dennis (Michael Gunther) viewing five highly erotic photographs of shadows and limbs. These images have an effect on Dennis, so much so they change from representation to reality in his life, yet taking on different meaning as time passes. Combined with the media's bombardment of violence and negative images

as "entertainment", this fascination turns into a fullblown obsession of pushing the limits thru violence.
"Frisk" also addresses Dennis' sexual compulsion, the mixing of his sheer hatred and unrelenting desires. The movie intermixes reality with reverie, as dreams and memories are cinematically interwoven, confusing the viewer as to
what really is unfolding in Dennis' life.
"Frisk" will challenge the viewer's own subjectivity and pleasure points. Having seen our culture desensitize and desexualize our perceptions of ourselves, "Frisk" unveils the underlying ugliness this has created. <<Mike Mantoya>> For tickets, call 614-292-2354.
